We shall give some direct evidence of the fact that the sounds "R" and "L" were often subject to flexion. Amsterdam, among others, is a city whose name was affected by such instability and was called AmsteR-dam, AmsteLdam, Amstelodami, etc. (, page XLI). We should mention another interesting fact here.
