Project background and the design process

Construction of this centre forms part of the RAC's policy of providing 'high profile, technologically advanced information centres adjacent to all major UK motorway intersections' (World Architecture, 1996). This one followed on from their landmark Rescue Control and Training Centre, alongside the M6 at Walsall, some 130km to the north, and completed in 1989 (Flack 1990). RAC policy also embraced environmental awareness and this was to be pursued in the design of the building to the extent...

Performance in practice and lessons learned

Energy efficiency was an important criteria for this building and according to Bolin and Hamilton (1996), the design heating and cooling load predictions were 10 less than Arizona State targets, A group of Arizona State University (ASU) students undertook a study of the efficacy of some of the passive systems, concluding that 'even though internal sources of heat are the primary issues in internal load dominated buildings, envelope design is still critical in extreme climates' (like that of...

Design outcome and thermal environmental control systems

With its 45m long axis east-west, the main part of the building has three floors of offices on its south side and a full-height glazed atrium to the north (Figures l2.l and l2.2). 12.2 South-north cross-section indicating natural ventilation air flow routes (based on Nikken Sekkei drawings). 12.1 Floor plan at Level 4 (based on Nikken Sekkei drawings). 12.2 South-north cross-section indicating natural ventilation air flow routes (based on Nikken Sekkei drawings). 12.3 Central plant on open...

Expression of environmental control systems

The Royal Australian Institute of Architects jury, in awarding Menara UMNO its 1998 International Award, likened it to 'a vertical aeroplane wing aligned towards the prevailing winds with funnels channelling air into the interior to reduce dependence on air-conditioning. Close attention to environmental concerns has provided both functional and decorative elements. Shade elements in recyclable aluminium reduce glare. This project stands out 18.12 Gangway and solar shading, north-facing corner....

Lonica Building Cambridge England

Webler and Geissler (1997) see the Gotz Headquarters as 'a straightforward, user-friendly office building a high quality working environment, energy efficient, open and transparent, in which technology, although clearly apparent, is not over-emphasised aesthetically but rather presented as an equal partner in the total building concept'. In this, they are certainly not referring to the HVAC 6.8 Section of the fa ade. Note the louvre configuration on the ground floor level the upper part...

Commerzbank Headquarters Frankfurt Germany

Commerzbank Headquarter Frankfurt

The closely fought competition for the design of a new head office building, adjacent to their existing premises in the heart of Frankfurt, was won by the London-based practice of Foster and Partners, with RP+K Sozietat winning selection as environmental engineering consultants. In the context of the environmental movement in Germany at that time, the urban planning criteria of Frankfurt and the brief from the client, the project 'provided an opportunity 3.44 The BRE Environmental Building,...

Ionica Headquarters Cambridge UK

Ionica Building Cambridge

Built for St John's College and located within its Innovation Park in the north of Cambridge, this three-storey 4000m2 floor area block has been the headquarters of Ionica, a telecommunications company, since it took up occupancy in October 1994. Design architect for the project was David Emond. A graduate of the Sheffield University School of Architecture with several years of experience in commercial and other projects with different London practices, he joined the Cambridge-based RH...
