Garage Sales and Flea Markets

Some people enjoy making regular rounds of local flea markets and garage sales where it is often possible to find excellent new and used building supplies. At garage sales, quantities will usually be small and consist of leftovers from other people's building projects. Prices are often low, since people want to get rid of these bulky and useless items.

Ingress Park Greenhithe Waterfront

Of Ingress Abbey, now a new mixed development. The 29-hectare site started as a major clean-up programme, many features and materials were recycled and the Capability Brown parkland restored. The framework plan focused on the site's urban design opportunities and created eight distinct character areas reflecting the existing identities. The resulting landscape includes the creation of a waterfront path and associated spaces, waterside park, countryside linkages and areas of public realm of distinct character and quality augmented by the good choice of materials.

Other Residential Lighting

Preset multiscene controls allow for a variety of lighted settings in dining rooms, from predining events to clean-up tasks. Family rooms, great rooms, and living rooms should achieve a relaxing, casual atmosphere through the use of a nonuniform, mostly perimeter lighting system. Ambient lighting is best provided by soft indirect lighting. Downlights, wall sconces, table lamps, or other accents can be used for higher task lighting levels. Artwork, sculpture, and other architectural features should be highlighted with recessed adjustable accents, surface monopoints, a track system, or a wire rail system for maximum flexibility.

Clarke Quay Singapore an abandoned warehouse area 198993 2003

Singapore River Year 1992

Prior to the development of Clarke Quay, the URA had already embarked on a 10-year programme to clean up the highly polluted Singapore River. This clean-up was made possible because, the waterway's traditional commercial role as a transhipment centre had been lost as the result of the development of new shipping technologies.

To The reader of Architecture In Europe

The same is the problem with architecture you cannot see an ecological building. Of course you can build the image of an ecological house. The house under the apple tree, for instance. Or you can calculate how to save energy and how to clean up the environment. The problem with the second is that nobody will take pictures of it and publish it.

Protect the collections as a whole

A simple and inexpensive prevention measure is to use a day normally closed to the public and devote it to a thorough cleanup. This simple step alone can significantly lower the fire hazard. Cleaning up in itself makes everyone feel good and costs nothing except possibly the rental of a large trash container. It is advisable to consult local authorities on hazardous waste disposal for paint or chemicals prior to this process.

Evaluate housekeeping and maintenance procedures

Cleaning up can lower the fire hazard in a building significantly. Closing the institution for a day and devoting it to clearing out and cleaning up is a step that in itself makes everyone feel good and costs nothing more than possibly rental of a dumpster to remove the rubbish.

You Draw Inspiration From The World Around

The dispute over demolition involves two competing redevelopment philosophies. On one hand, there is Mayor Kilpatrick's clean, safe, beautiful mantra for cleaning up downtown, in which the city targets its so-called dinosaur buildings those George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, led much of Kilpatrick's clean-up effort. He says he turns to demolition only as a last resort.

Making sweat equity practical

Typically cohousing groups can talk their contractors into letting them assist with the installation of the required landscaping. They can sometimes arrange to come in on weekends and clean up the site, managing the recycling of materials, for instance. This can save the contractor money and they may be willing to give you the credit. But remember, they are responsible to the bank for getting the project done on time and on budget. If you arrange to provide any of the work the contractor will still be responsible for making sure it gets done and doing it if you don't.

Green Futures for Industrial Brownfields

While planners, economists, and community and business leaders discuss what can be done to revitalize these districts, a frequent theme is the increasing role that so-called greening must play in cleaning up such districts, enhancing their attractiveness for business and growth. This essay examines efforts being undertaken in three Rust Belt cities to use greening as a primary tool in the regeneration, revital-ization, and restructuring of industrial brownfield districts the Menomonee Valley in Milwaukee, the Port Lands in Toronto, and the Lake Calumet area in Chicago. These cases indicate the value of regreening as an overall strategy for the revitaliza-tion of brownfields in urban areas generally. Progress was made in the mid-1990s when governments at all levels began experimenting with a range of new approaches for encouraging remediation and redevelopment (Meyer, Williams, and Yount 1995 Bartsch 1996 Simons 1998 Council for Urban Economic Development 1999). In 1995, the U.S....

Water offences

Decision was made to circumvent these measures by drilling a hole through the bund wall to prevent the accumulation of excessive rainwater. This led to subsequent oil spillages being passed directly into the adjacent watercourse. The company cooperated fully with the Agency and employed oil clean-up contractors to deal with the pollution to the brook and pond, but nevertheless was fined 8000 plus costs (from Environment Times, Vol. 7 3, p. 45).

Storage Space

To ensure an orderly and neat room and reduce the number of stimuli present at any one time, storage space outside the classroom is important. It can also serve as a utility area for the teacher and should contain a large sink for preparation of paints and for cleaning up.

Halogenated extinguishing agents or halons may be used (instead of water) where water would damage the contents of a space such as in a computer facility. In this type of dry system, the halon gas is released when the system is triggered, smothering the fire while allowing people in the space to breathe. Halons can be extremely useful because they leave no residue to clean up after a fire and they do not cause thermal shock to delicate equipment. Dry chemical extinguishing agents are used mainly to combat fires involving flammable liquids (Class B) and electrical equipment (Class C). Local jurisdictions may additionally require the provision of back-up water based sprinkler systems (wet or dry) in areas of dry chemical use to provide supplemental basic building structure protection, as dry chemical systems may be considered incapable of providing adequate building structural protection in a prolonged fire.

Preparing the Site

Plastering is hard, heavy work. You want to minimize the amount of effort you expend on anything other than plastering the wall, so prepare your site thoroughly. Clean up any obstacles inside and outside the house. You will need to walk without impediment and to deliver wheelbarrows of fresh mud to all points along the walls. Be sure to create wide, strong, well-braced ramps wherever wheelbarrows need to enter and exit the house, and bridge any holes or trenches on the site.

Flowers of the field

In other words, a fluid and flexible field-within-a-field (the existing urban context) is established, of greater and lesser intensities of built form, out of which 'diverse relationships' emerge, phased to grow in tandem with a step by step clean-up of the polluted site. The design not only 'does the work', it represents the work that is being done.

It is important to clean up your tools, equipment, and site before the plaster has hardened. Trowels, buckets, shovels, wheelbarrows, mixing equipment anything that's touched plaster should be scraped and rinsed before it becomes impossible to clean. It's easy to lose expensive

A smaller version of the smoothing-plane not available in wooden form which can be held in one hand is the metal block-plane, and this 6 in (152 mm) plane is best obtained with an adjustable mouth and cutter. The cheaper versions are not fully adjustable and the cutter position must be set by trial and error. For working large rebates (rabbets) in which a heavy section is to be taken out, a special bench rabbet-plane is obtainable, and for general light rabbeting, etc., the improved rabbet-plane which, if fitted with sliding fence, depth-stop and spur for scoring across the grain ahead of the cutter to prevent tearing out, becomes the rebate- and fillister-plane, although the term 'fillister' is tending to die out. (Rabbet probably a carpenter's corruption of rebate to deduct from, to diminish . Fillister also means a groove or rebate.) Truing up the sides of rebates and cleaning up the shoulders of tenons, etc., can be done with the shoulder rabbet-plane with machined parallel sides...

Carcass assembly

Carcas Construction

Most old craftsmen only kissed the joints with glue, a dab on each tenon and perhaps a wipe across the shoulders, a brushful across the end of dovetails which were then smeared across the pin section, a trickle of glue run into the housings dadoes. This was deliberate as it saved time applying and time in cleaning up, but the joints did fit and the glue was fairly thick but with modern glues of low viscosity there is always a danger of starved joints if only a minimum of glue is used and the wood absorbent or the cramping clamping pressure too great. Moreover, there is no comparison between this day and age and 80 years ago, for furniture must now withstand the ravages of central heating, and so every part should be glued thoroughly. If the surfaces are delicate then a wash coat of white shellac or cellulose can be applied up to but not over the glue-line to protect the surface, and a stick of chalk rubbed across the extreme edge of meeting joints will

Kitchen Arrangement

The relative location of work centers should permit a continuity of kitchen activities as follows (1) Storage (gathering materials needed for the performance of the taskj (2) Cleaning and mixing (or initial preparation) (3) Cooking (4) Serving, or storing for future use and 5) Cleaning up. (See Fig. 5.)

Solar umbrella

Frugality and sustainability are the hallmarks of Pugh + Scarpa's practice, and Lawrence Scarpa's family house is an imaginative manifestation of those principles. Despite its imposing facade, it is an addition a spacious living area grafted onto the rear of a vintage 60sqm bungalow, and an upstairs master suite cantilevered back without touching the roof of the old building, so avoiding the need to bring the old structure up to code. A tilt-up concrete shear wall braces a wood-frame structure, and a steel frame supports the cantilever. All the other materials are recycled rusted cold-rolled steel for the front fence and surface cladding, cherry wood and chipboard, homosote (pulped newsprint) and a translucent screen of plastic pellets used to clean up oil spills.

Materials selection

The materials you select for your project will have a significant environmental impact both short and long term. But you can choose materials that are considerably healthier, more durable and more earth-friendly than others, and you don't necessarily need to pay more for them. Green building materials have a reputation for being expensive, and, in fact, some are. But often that reputation stems from comparing the price of a top-quality green product to that of a low-budget conventional product. Sheet flooring is a good example. You can often find vinyl flooring for less than 5 a square yard, but no one claims it will stay looking good very long. Its design layer is literally paper-thin. Vinyl flooring with through-color design, which lasts much longer, often costs about 35 a square yard. True linoleum, a wonderful alternative made from natural ingredients such as linseed oil and wood, usually costs about 29. It looks great for 40 years or more, and if you do eventually replace it, it...

Lighting Sources

They were bemoaning the limited space when Bill suggested that they borrow an aesthetic approach that celebrated the beauty of small spaces. The ductwork would be enclosed in a soffit, which would clean up its appearance and also help muffle any noise from the HVAC system. On the face of the soffit, they would build a ledge to hold a strip with small candelabra-style lamps. In front of the soffit, they would install narrow metal frames. The frames would hold a translucent material that looked like handmade paper but was made for lighting fixtures. The frames could be lifted off to change lamps. The result was a glowing panel, lit from behind, that suggested a traditional Japanese shoji screen. The yoga meditation room became a delicate, minimalist, Japanese-style space.

Cross Veneering

Straight end and one mitre simultaneously. With hide glue narrow strips hardly need wetting before laying, and this should be avoided wherever possible as it only swells up the strips, nor need the strips be laid with an overlap for it is simple enough to cut each strip exactly square, glue, hammer in position and tape the joint with a temporary weight placed over it to keep it from curling. If cramping techniques are employed it is better to use resin glue, fitting, gluing and cramping each section in sequence, for there will be ample time to fit the joints while for press-work with either hide glue and cauls or resin glue and veneer-press the strips can be assembled, taped and laid as a whole, driving in fine veneer pins and pinching off the tops to prevent the veneers floating in the press. The glue should be thoroughly hard before the surplus edges are trimmed back, and care should be taken not to hit or round over the faces when cleaning up. In fact, it will always pay to tack...

You can probably find lumber or plywood, doors, windows, toilets, sinks, furniture, and just about anything else that goes into a house, though your scavenged items may need a little repair or come in odd sizes or shapes. A clever scavenger will make note of piles of materials sitting in people's yards and garages and offer to clean up in exchange for keeping the materials. This kind of activity can net you large quantities of good
