Occupational Safety and Health Administration

In 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Act established the Occupational Safety and Health Administra tion (OSHA) as a branch of the Department of Labor responsible for protecting employees in the workplace. This administration adds to code requirements by regulating the design of buildings and interior projects where people are employed, in order to ensure the safety of employees in the workplace. Contractors and subcontractors on construction projects must strictly adhere to OSHA requirements. The regulations put forth by OSHA stress safe installation of materials and equipment in order to create a safe work environment for construction workers and for future building occupants. Interior designers should be aware that these regulations exist and that they affect the process of building construction and installation of equipment and furnishings.
