Gond and Bhumia tribal peoples in India (Fuchs 1960, 26), among the Rindi of Sumba, Indonesia (Forth 1981, 55), and many, many, other societies as well. An east-facing orientation has little to do with the compass but a great deal to do with the rising sun, which variously represents rebirth, fertility, light, renewal, energy, even life itself. In India among the Gonds, the east-facing door is constructed to be so low that the peasant exiting in the early morning must bow to the rising sun god (Fuchs 1960, 26).

Rivers from their beds, change lakes into meadows and meadows into forests, and turn old materials into new ones throughout the natural world. Change is the constant factor in Nature. Birth, growth, maturity, decline, death, decay, and rebirth are the stages in all natural cycles. So too with buildings, but we humans like to keep the cycle under human control, to maintain each building in use until its death suits our purposes.

These observations bring us to the subject of ecological sus-tainability, which is strongly related to inequality in the world. This means that we have to save our resources, especially energy, and make a greater effort to use materials and space much better than we do at present. We have to avoid deterioration, exploitation and pollution as side effects of manufacturing, producing, using and recycling buildings. The argument for designing buildings that are environmentally friendly over their entire lifetime is well established, but the philosophy has been slow to find its way into normal practice. The concept of a building as a generator of waste, in its conception, during its long life and in its death (and possible rebirth), is an important one. Too often we are concerned only with the completion of a project, forgetting that it is during its use that a building, aided and abetted by its inhabitants, is particularly wasteful of energy and resources.

This fostered a flourishing economy which also led to notable investment in the construction sector many buildings for government, administrative and sports purposes bear witness to this. They were all built in an age dominated by steel and concrete the indigenous material timber remained totally neglected - like in most other countries. As the Cold War ended, so did Finland's economic prosperity. The financial consequences of the great building boom are proving to be enormous, the economy is stagnating. With the general rebirth of interest in timber as a building material, Finland too - which in Alvar Aalto has an architect of international renown - is beginning to re-establish traditional forms of timber construction. Concepts of history and aesthetics became a fundamental part of Western culture. The rediscovery of folklore strengthened the feeling of national identity, and gave birth to the revival of national traditions, including the rebirth of suppressed languages (Berlin, 1992 Jokilehto, 1995). In the nineteenth century, there was a tendency even to invent traditions, as was seen in Britain, India and Africa (Hobsbawm and Ranger, 1983).
I think that the landscape architect, when starting to plan a new garden, has to have this notion somewhere hidden deep inside, and during the design process he tries to revive, to validate and to re-construct it. Therefore, the creation of a garden should be first called a rebirth, the rebirth of the Garden of Eden.

The great outpouring of art, commerce, and discovery that was later described as the Renaissance or rebirth, first started in northern Italy and gradually spread to the rest of Europe. The development of new music during these years was rich and profuse. Thousands of pieces were composed and, while sacred music still dominated, secular music also thrived (Hemming, 1988).

Other more recent researchers suggest that caricature is a relatively recent art. Ernst Gombrich and Ernst Kris have undertaken a comprehensive study of caricature. In their research, they discover a rebirth of caricature, as opposed to humorous art, in that portrait caricature was uncommon before the end of the sixteenth century. For them the '.conscious distortion of the features of a person with the aim of ridicule ' is substantially different from comic art (Kris & Gombrich, 1938). Choked with this need for signification, and bound by demands of economic and performance-based efficiencies, architecture has been excluded from the discourses of the aesthetic for nearly a century. It seems unlikely that digital technologies would be responsible for a 21st-century rebirth of aesthetics as a discourse, and even less likely that one of the first aesthetic judgements to emerge from this hiatus would be the historically aureate elegance - if for no other reason than its previously, and even distasteful, historical associations with the elite.
As seen in relation to the Gothic style, the architecture of the Renaissance represents a complete break with tradition, even though the two styles coexisted for a long time. In Italy the memory of classical antiquity had never died and so it is not surprising that we should see in the early 15th century a rebirth of classical art and learning. Architects and designers sought to rediscover the essence of Roman architecture, both by looking at its monuments, and above all by studying Vitruvius's Treatise on Architecture.
As a thought process sketches are ambivalent they can weave different meanings on numerous levels simultaneously and, consequently, as grotesque items they can provide multiple interpretations. As facilitators of the design process, sketches constitute a process of creativity and, thus, a medium of transition or progression. As a process they are personal in nature and can depict metamorphosis and rebirth for the architect, through humor, satire and paradox.
