The compressor refrigerator is based on a thermodynamic cycle whereby a gas is compressed mechanically, causing it to heat up. After discharging its heat the gas, still under pressure, liquefies. The liquid is allowed to expand by lowering the pressure. In the process it evaporates, absorbing heat from its surroundings. The relationship between the cooling capacity and the power needed to achieve it is called the coefficient of performance (CoP). For well-designed machines this can approach 100%. In a solar linked system, PVs could provide electricity for the compressor.
