7.2.1 Energy concept

The Passivhaus standard and a sustainable ecological design were achieved with the following energy concepts:

• timber construction with a high degree of insulation;

• ventilation system with 85 per cent heat recovery for heating and cooling;

• 6000 litre filter cistern for rainwater storage; and

• 10350 Wp grid connected photovoltaic system on the roof.

As a result of the high level of insulation and heat recovery, the normal requirement of having a flue for emergency heating was waived, resulting in significant cost savings.

The roof is sloped 10° to the south, allowing the photovoltaic (PV) panels to be architecturally integrated. The 86 m2 PV modules were made by Solarfabrik using a carbon dioxide (CO2) neutral production process. The one third more electricity produced than consumed is fed into the utility grid.

7.2.2 Data

Scheme of domestic engineering

The ventilation system serving the two-storey building has 85 per cent heat recovery. Through ground heat-exchanger pipes, 12°C warm air enters the system, is cleaned through two filters and is delivered to the living rooms at 300 mm/sec. The air is exhausted from the kitchen, bathroom and toilet. The air-to-air heat exchanger raises the incoming air temperature at least 4 K. The electric heat pump supplies the remaining heat needed to ensure that air delivered to the living spaces is between 16°C and 20°C at a rate of one air change per hour. In summer, the ground-cooled ventilation air helps to keep the house comfortable. Energy saving lamps of 460 W are used in the house.
