5.1.1 Portrait and context

Since August 2001, eight families have lived in the apartment building Wechsel in Stans, a village in central Switzerland. Wechsel is the first multi-family Passivhaus in Switzerland. The building is part of a housing estate with 12 apartment buildings planned by BARBOS Bauteam GmbH.

The builder aimed for an energy efficient building using passive and active solar gains that is ecological and cost effective. The remaining heat energy demand was to be provided by renewable energies. After discussing the heating production and distribution, the solution was deemed to be a Passivhaus construction.

5.1.2 Architectural concept

The four-storey building consists of eight apartments, of which six are maisonettes. The top floor has a 4m offset, used as a terrace. The compact cube is oriented to the south (30° west). The main rooms are generously glazed and face south. The floor plan of each apartment differs slightly, reflecting the occupants' individual preferences.

The technical room, utility room and private cellars are situated in the basement. Parking is available in the underground garage.

5.1.3 Construction

The building is in timber construction. The prefabricated wooden elements for the interior and exterior walls are selectively reinforced with steel beams and steel pillars, and were mounted within a few days. The ceilings are combined timber/concrete structures.

The unheated basement is constructed with masonry and concrete. The balconies and the staircase for the exterior access at the north façade, as well as the balconies to the south, are constructed with steel and reinforced concrete, respectively. They are statically and thermally completely separated from the well-insulated cube.
