Internal stairways

Where a lift is not provided in a building then a stairway suitable for ambulent disabled people or those with impaired sight should be provided. The principal variations permitted are:

• Uniform risers should not exceed 170 mm in height

• Uniform goings should not be less than 250 mm in length (measured 270 mm in from the narrow edge of the flight for tapered steps).

• Stair nosings should be distinguished for the benefit of people with impaired sight.

• The maximum rise of a flight between landings should not exceed 1 800 mm.
