Ramped access

• Should have a non-slip surface.

• Ideally, should not be steeper than 1 in 20. However, a 1 in 15 ramp is permitted if the individual flight is no longer than 10 m. Similarly a 1 in 12 ramp is allowed where the flight does not exceed 5 m in length.

• Should have a landing top and bottom at least 1 200 mm long, clear of any door swing.

• Should have intermediate landings at least 1 500 mm long, clear of any door swing.

• Should have on any open side of a flight or landing a raised kerb at least 100 mm high. This helps to avoid the risk to wheelchair users of their feet catching under or in an open balustrade.

• Should have handrails on both sides if the ramp is over 2 m long.
