Support attachments

Although glazing can be attached directly to the support structure, it is more common to use separate components, called glazing support attachments, that form an interface to allow easier adjustment in position, and which are less reliant on the accuracy of setting out of the main structure. Glazing support attachments are normally located at the node points of trusses. Glazing panels can be attached to one side of lattice and Vierendeel trusses, or occasionally on both sides where a twin-skin façade is required.

Glazing panels supported on bowstring trusses may either be positioned to one side of the truss (in which case they are often attached to extended struts, as in Figure 9.6) or set within the truss (in which case the system should be detailed to allow the truss members to pass through the plane of the glazing).

Glazing support attachments may take many forms, but the most common are:

• angle brackets

• clamping devices.

These alternative devices are illustrated in Figure 9.13. Simple attachments to tubular connections, as in Figure 9.13(a), are relatively stiff, whereas 'spider' attachments, as in Figure 9.13(b), are more flexible.

Castings are often used for the connection nodes in 'planar glazing' systems. These castings can be steel or aluminium, although stainless

steel is often preferred. Standard castings are readily available from some suppliers, but bespoke fittings can add significantly to the lead-in times for these components.
