Alis is a natural clay finish. The clay is mixed with water to the consistency of heavy cream and applied with brushes, sponges, or sheepskin. Lighter clays, including natural white clays, can be tinted, but often the natural color of the clay becomes the finish color.

Mica flakes and marble or granite dust are sometimes added for effect. Add a cooked flour paste to prevent the clay from dusting once dry. Although these finishes are ideal for interiors, they can be used on exteriors that are well protected by roof overhangs.

20.5: Silicate paints, used on the exterior of this home, are ideally suited to plastered bale walls, as they are designed to bond with mineral surfaces to eliminate water penetration but still allow the walls to "breathe."
