Being Open and Friendly

It is best to maintain an open, friendly attitude toward your building inspector. Remember, it's his or her job to allow building, not to prevent it. Ideally, inspectors are there to assist as you build the home you want. Begin with this attitude, rather than with a confrontational one. Try to avoid criticizing conventional construction, since inspectors are closely connected to conventional practices. Express a general familiarity with the building code. Stress the many positive reasons for choosing straw bale, and let your inspector know that you are willing to be a reasonable working partner in achieving code compliance for your straw bale plans. While there is plenty of opportunity to go over the head of your inspector, this should only be a last resort.
