Building a strong, well-drained, frost-protected foundation that is square and level is very important. Many people panic when considering their foundations, and assume they should hire out the work to ensure it's done right. There are some good reasons to hire out foundations, especially if a lot of concrete formwork is required. But we have seen enough wonky professionally built foundations to know that hiring out won't always get your desired results. Regardless of who does the work, it needs to be done carefully. Nowhere does the line,"measure it twice,do it once" apply more strongly. The shape of your foundation will have many ongoing implications throughout the rest of the project, so do the work carefully, check it many times, refer to the plans often, and don't

finalize anything (especially in concrete) until you're sure it's right.
