Latex or Oilbased Paints

These products should never be used on the exterior of a bale wall. They will create a mois-tureproof skin that will trap moisture in the walls and potentially cause rot to occur. Don't do this!

We also discourage their use indoors, although they are less likely to cause harm to the bale walls. They will, however, seal the interior walls and prevent them from absorbing excess moisture from inside the building. Painted bale homes are more likely to have condensation on the windows in the winter and higher overall humidity levels, since the walls cannot perform their sponge-like duties.

If you are going to use latex paints, be sure to source low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) versions that leave fewer toxins in the air you breathe.
